While usually slower than rsync (often a lot slower, depending on which version control software you re using), one valid way of getting your application to the server is to make a version control checkout. For stability purposes, you should use your version control software s implementation of tags. A tag is a label for a particular release. In Subversion, this is just a directory where particular release versions of your application are copied over to a tags directory within the repository. In git, it s a representation of the state of commits at a particular point. However, with Subversion (or CVS), if your application requires traversing the filesystem (e.g., if you use the filesystem as a data store), you ll need to ensure that you exclude the .svn subdirectories in any code that you write that traverses subdirectories programmatically. Once you have the version control checkout on the server, it should be a simple matter of getting new code to the server by issuing the following command (for a Subversion/Apache arrangement on a Unix system): $ svn update && prove -l t && sudo /etc/init.d/apache restart or this one: $ svn update && prove -l t && sudo/etc/init.d/myapp restart if you re using a stop-start daemon with FastCGI or a reverse proxy arrangement. In either case, the command updates the code. If the update is successful, it runs the tests, and if the tests pass, it restarts the server. This can be convenient, but it does require discipline to ensure that you don t accidentally check out the wrong part of the code repository (e.g., a revision broken in some way).
