At the time I started getting serious with Perl, there was a slump in popularity of the Perl language. Perl 5 was already 10 years old, and progress on Perl 6 seemed to have stalled. Many people were calling the language dead. However, a wonderful thing has happened in the last few years. The stability of the Perl 5 platform has allowed an unparalleled level of flexibility in extending and altering the language itself. Modern object-oriented Perl hardly resembles the code people remember from the CGI scripts of the first Perl 5 surge. Thanks to Moose, Perl has an object system with flexibility only found in experimental researcher languages. Things like roles and full-featured introspection have completely changed how we write Perl applications. This is why it was important to move Catalyst to the Moose framework. While there is still much scope for Catalyst to make even better use of Moose, the techniques you will learn in this book will be valid for a long time to come. We believe in stability and giving you the freedom to write awesome new applications, rather than spending your time rewriting your existing sites every time a new version of the framework is released.

Lately there has been a flurry of activity in defining the face of modern Perl 5. The new Enlightened Perl Organisation (http://www.enlightenedperl.org/) was founded to support Perl development efforts that ensure Perl s future as an enterprise-grade development platform. Among other things, the organization has a working group to define a modern extended core of Perl modules, and it puts on the Iron Man Blogging Challenge. There is also a modern Perl book under development and several other efforts like http:// catalyzed.org/, a site dedicated to modern Perl as well as Catalyst development.

You may have noticed that Table 7-2 shows 2000 and 4000 for the CHAR and VARCHAR2 datatype limits, respectively. You might wonder in which unit these numbers are expressed. That depends on the value of the NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS parameter. The default for the Oracle DBMS is to use BYTE length semantics. If you want to make your SQL code independent of this parameter, you can override its value by using explicit BYTE and CHAR suffixes in your datatype specifications.
