The difference between VARCHAR2 and CHAR datatypes is the treatment of comparisons involving strings of different lengths. There are two different semantics to compare strings of different lengths: padded comparison (padding with spaces) and nonpadded comparison. If you compare two strings, character by character, and all of the characters are identical until the point where the shortest string is processed, nonpadded comparison semantics automatically declares the longest string as being greater than the shorter string. On the other hand, padded comparison semantics extends the shortest string with spaces until the length of the longest string, and continues comparing characters. This means that trailing spaces in strings don t influence padded comparison results. Here are examples of the comparison types: Padded comparison: 'RAID5' = 'RAID5 ' '

The latest trend in this ecosystem has been reinventing Perl using Perl. Driven by underlying technologies like Devel::Declare and Variable::Magic, efforts like MooseX::Declare, which defines a new class syntax for Moose; MooseX::Lexical::Types, which is a new way to define typed variables; and TryCatch, a comprehensive exception mechanism, actually add new first-class keywords to the language. Much of this work has been inspired by the ongoing Perl 6 project.

Another way to search Concordance is via the <Quick Search> text field located under Concordance s menu items (see Figure 2-6). This method isn t as structured as the Query by Example tool, but is quite flexible.

I want to conclude this foreword with some thoughts on the future of Catalyst. In a large ecosystem like Catalyst, developers require stability and predictability. There are a lot of add-ons that depend on the core runtime, and we have tried to keep these things as unchanged from 5.7 to 5.8 as possible. We remain dedicated to supporting this interface for the entire 5.8 Catalyst series. To put things into perspective, the 5.7 series lasted from July 7, 2006, to April 18, 2009. It s a natural progression that most of the exciting new developments happen in the edge of the dependency graph. Still, there is a parallel run to develop the next major iteration of the framework. This effort is planned to be released under the Catalyst6 namespace, and it will likely target a lot of Perl 6 features implemented using Moose and Declare techniques on the Perl 5 platform. Much of this work is still in progress, and we re going to be taking our time with it to get it right. There is an important difference between the RAW and VARCHAR2 datatypes. RAW column data (like BLOB data) is never interpreted by the DBMS in any way. For example, VARCHAR2 column data is converted automatically during transport from an ASCII to an EBCDIC environment. You typically use the RAW and BLOB datatypes for columns containing binary data, such as scanned documents, sound tracks, and movie fragments.

Other methods of retrieving records exist, and are described in more detail in 9. Regardless of the method a user prefers, search accuracy in Concordance is facilitated by a well-designed database, a well-known set of data (that is, users understand what fields are and what they mean), and a basic understanding of Concordance s search syntax. Later chapters also contain a thorough discussion of this syntax.
