Last but not least, the Oracle optimizer uses knowledge about constraint information from the data dictionary to decide about efficient execution plans for SQL statements. MySQL is less powerful and full featured than PG, and it has more gotchas. Traditionally it s used for fast and simple storage. It s catching up with the rest of the world on SQL support. SQLite (http://www.sqlite.org): This is free software. Use it if you need a stand-alone database that is easy to use and install. It stores the data in a single transportable file, and it runs on all major operating systems. It implements a useful subset of SQL and is an excellent choice for use during development, but it will not cope well with multiple concurrent users making writes to the database without significant fiddling around.

A snapshot stores information about how you ve elected to search, sort, and view records at a given instant in time If there s any search history in effect prior to the restoration of a snapshot, it s destroyed and replaced with the search history stored in the snapshot itself Any sort order applied to records when the snapshot was saved is also restored Snapshots are useful when you want to save a search history and settings between Concordance sessions Because the snapshot saves information about a Concordance session, you can know that, when a snapshot is restored, you re viewing the same search history, with the same sort order as when you left off from a previous session The snapshot even saves information about which record was active when the snapshot was saved.

In this chapter, we will use the SQLite database, because as we said, it is truly excellent for initial development. Note that code we will produce will work for all the other database systems mentioned, with minimal code modification. If you have any difficulties getting it running on an alternative system, check the generated SQL and refer to the relevant documentation.
