Documents Dialog The first dialog asks you which documents should feed the report (see Figure 10-10). The First and Last values displayed in this dialog depend on the result of the last active query that s displayed in Concordance. You can elect to print all documents of a database, or you can select a subset of those records. If the most active query itself represents a subset of all records in the database, you can elect to print all those results, or a subset of that subset.

The difference between generic versus specific is very important in database design. For example, common words in natural languages such as book and course have both generic and specific meanings. In spoken language, the precise meaning of these words is normally obvious from the context in which they are used.

By now, you should have a very solid grasp of Catalyst s authentication system. In this chapter, we covered the three aspects of access control in web applications: authentication, persistence, and authorization, and how Catalyst s authentication system handles each one. We ve shown that Catalyst s authentication system is capable of dealing with almost any authentication requirement. The SneakyCat application we developed demonstrates how authentication is most likely to be handled in a web application and how you are most likely to use it in your own applications. If you have not done so already, we encourage you to explore the SneakyCat application to see how all the pieces fit together in a running application. It is worth noting that the Cookbook also contains some examples of other authentication-related functionality you are likely to be interested in. In the next chapter we cover using Catalyst to consume and produce web services. We show how to use an existing CPAN module to consume a web service, create our own REST service, and as a side effect of this, we show how to interrogate a REST web service if no existing CPAN module is available for it. Finally, we describe the options available if you want to use XML-based web services with Catalyst.

When designing data models, you must be very careful about the distinction between generic and specific meanings of the same word. For example, a course has a title and a duration (generic), while a specific course offering has a location, a certain number of attendees, and an instructor. A specific book on the shelf might have your name and purchase date on the cover page, and it might be full of your personal annotations. A generic book has a title, an author, a publisher, and an ISBN code. This means that you should be careful when using words like course and book for database entities, because they could be confusing and suggest the wrong meaning. Moreover, we must maintain a clear separation between an entity itself at the generic level and a specific occurrence of that entity. Along the same lines, there is a difference between an entity attribute (at the generic level) and a specific attribute value for a particular entity occurrence.

Page Numbering and Dates Dialog The next dialog controls how page numbers, date and time, and fonts should be displayed in the report (see Figure 10-11). Page numbers are printed in the lower right-hand corner of each page. Date and time values are printed in the lower left-hand corner of the report.
